Maths
We use White Rose Maths to provide a structured, play-based approach to early maths learning, in Reception, the focus is on building deep understanding of number, shape, measure and patterns through hands-on activities, talk and exploration.
Number
Children learn to:
- Recognise, count and order numbers to 10 and beyond.
- Develop subitisting skills (seeing small quanities without counting).
- Compare quanitities using language like; more, fewer, same.
- Understnad composition of numbers (e.g. 2 and 3 make 5)
- Use five-frames, ten-frames, beadstrings and real objects.
- Begin simple addition and subtraction through stories and practical tasks.
Patterns and Shape
Children explore:
- Matching, sorting and notciing patterns.
- 2D and 3D shape through handling and building.
- Positional Language .
- Creating and continuing repeating patterns.
- Spatial awareness through puzzles, construction and movement.
Measure
They learn concepts like:
- Length, height, weight and capacity through comparison.
- Time sequencing (e.g. routines, first, next, last)
- Using everyday language (taller, shorter, heavier, lighter, full, empty)
Mathematical Talk
A big emphsis is placed on:
- Explaining thinking.
- Describing patterns, numbers and reasoning.
- Using correctly mathematical vocabulary in practical contexts.
Alongside whole class input and adult led groups sessions these areas of learning are embedded through play based learning in role play, outdoor leanring and stories, songs and small world play.
The White Rose 1 Minute Maths App can be useful to help support some of these concepts - particularly the Subitising.
